Are there any special requirements for driving or hiring a car in Azerbaijan?

Driving in Azerbaijan isn’t for the faint of heart, however it’s certainly nothing to be afraid of and armed with the right knowledge before you hit the roads (in your own car, an Azerbaijan rental car or indeed a rental car from a neighbouring country), there are miles of highway to explore from the freedom of your own transport.

The authorities are clearly keen to attract visitors and have invested heavily in the country’s infrastructure meaning driving in Baku in particular is much like any cosmopolitan city in Europe, venture beyond however and you’ll find some beautiful spots only accessible in your own car. The 58,000 km road network is of variable condition, roads in and around Baku are generally of a high standard, however roads outside of Baku can be of very poor condition so caution is advised.
