Are there any special requirements for driving or hiring a car in Bangladesh?

Driving in Bangladesh is not for the faint hearted. Whether you are driving on the roads in and around its capital Dhaka where you'll need all of your senses on red alert or you're taking a scenic road in the countryside where whilst quiet they are home to many hazards, driving in Bangladesh shouldn't be feared, but you need to be prepared. Of course, it depends on what and where you are used to driving as whilst it may seem daunting to those used to driving in Europe or the USA, anyone who has driven in India or other Asian country may find driving in Bangladesh a breeze. It's certainly not as hectic or frantic as India or China and it's rural roads offer stunning views if you're willing to explore beyond the beaten track.

English is reasonably well spoken in Bangladesh, however the following phrases may come in handy, particularly when in rural areas;
 

• Motorway - রাস্তার ধারের (Rāstāra dhārēra)
• Petrol - পেট্রল (Pēṭrala)
• Windscreen - চালককে বাতাস হইতে রক্ষা (Cālakakē bātāsa ha'itē rakṣā)
• Petrol station - পেট্রোল স্টেশন (Pēṭrōla sṭēśana)
• Exit - প্রস্থান (Prasthāna)
