Are there any special requirements for driving or hiring a car in Georgia?

Not to be confused with the US stage of Georgia, driving in Georgia is closer to driving in Eastern Europe or Western Asia than anywhere in the USA. The former Soviet republic has a coastline on the Black Sea and its roads and scenery very similar to Russia bordering the north and Turkey to the South West. Its capital, Tbilisi, is a busy eastern European city like many others with multiple lane highways converging at its centre. Traffic is heavy and can be a little chaotic at times but driving in Georgia isn't something to be overly concerned about provided you are well prepared before you arrive. If you are renting a car in Georgia, our guide aims to offer practical and useful information to help you make the most of driving and Georgia and ensure safe passage throughout its road network.

Parking Information

Parking regulations

Parking in Tbilisi is permit controlled and you must purchase a permit from the Tbilisi Transport Company to use the marked zones. On-street parking, off-street car parks and reserved parking spaces are available, local signage setting max stay and parking charges.

Parking Enforcement
If parked illegally, or without a permit at best you can expect a parking ticket or at worst your car will be towed and a charge of 60 GEL imposed to release the car, increasing by 10 GEL per day.

Disabled Parking
Georgia has limited disabled parking provision, however Tbilisi is well appointed and signage is clear. Parking in a designated disabled parking bay without a permit will lead to a parking ticket, or again, the possibility of having the vehicle towed away.
