Are there any special requirements for driving or hiring a car in Guadeloupe?

In Guadeloupe you drive on the right, most of the roads are in fairly good conditions but winding roads are very common. In Basse-Terre roads can become mountainous and have very sharp turns which can make driving dangerous. It is best to avoid driving at night particularly in the mountain areas as roads may not be lit or marked. All occupants of the vehicle must wear a seat belt in Guadeloupe and the use of a mobile phone while driving is illegal unless you are using a hands-free kit.
