Are there any special requirements for driving or hiring a car in Lithuania?

Whilst only a short stretch of coastline, Lithuania's Baltic sea front is one of the highlights of this Baltic nation with many visitors here making their way to the north west of the country to enjoy it's beaches. Bordering Poland and Latvia and Belarus, driving in Lithuania will seem very famliar if you are used to driving in these countries. However if you are arriving by air and driving in Lithuania for the first time, or indeed in the region for the first time there are some things you need to know to stay safe when driving in Lithuania.

Parking Information

Parking regulations

Parking major towns and cities can be busy and it's recommended that you park in secure car parks where possible. Theft from parked cars is common and quiet side streets represent the highest risk. Parking on tram lines is obviously forbidden and will lead to your vehicle being towed away.

Parking with 15 metres of a bus stop and 5 meters of a junction is a violation of parking regulations in Lithuania and will result in a fine, or if considered a hazard, again result in your car being towed away.

Disabled parking in Lithuania is provided by designated disabled parking bays. Blue badge holders can use these bays which are often free, however you should check local signage / meters.
