Can I hire a car if under 25?

Last updated: 16/03/2020

Yes, most of the car hire companies we work with allow young drivers under the age of 25 to hire a car. This varies by car hire company and location so you should always check the driver requirements before making a booking to ensure you are able to hire a car if under 25 and to check the young driver surcharge.

When making a booking, ensure you ‘un-check’ the ‘Driver aged between 25-70’ box before performing a search to enable us to ensure we return only rental agents that permit drivers under 25 and display the appropriate young driver fee.

We offer a young driver discount of up to 10% off standard rates to help young drivers hire cars and offset some of the young driver fee. You can access our under 25 car hire discount here.

Yes, most car hire companies now permit drivers over the age of 70 to hire cars without restrictions. The days of over 70’s being restricted by car hire companies are largely behind us and most car hire companies now have a maximum age of 99. There are some exceptions still however and you should check the ‘Driver Requirements’ for your chosen rental before confirming your booking.

You should check the licence requirements for your specific rental where the need for an international driving permit will be confirmed.

The need for an international driving permit is dependent on your country and residence / licence issuing country and your destination of travel.

To check licence requirements you should click ‘Important Information’ at the quote stage for any individual rental and click ‘Driver’ where the licence requirements will be displayed.

As a general rule of thumb, if your domestic licence is not printed in the roman alphabet (Russian, Arabic, Greek etc) you will almost always require an international driving permit. Where an IDP is required you are still required to present your full domestic driving licence and another form of ID such as a passport as normal.

No, the car hire company will only accept an original, official document. If you have lost or had your driving licence stolen before picking up your hire car, please get in touch with us ASAP.

Where possible, we can attempt to change the main driver name (if you are travelling in a group / party) to enable the rental to proceed otherwise we advise you cancel the booking to get a refund and avoid a no-show / refusal of car on collection. Check cancellation policy for terms as if you need to cancel within 24/48 hours of pick-up a cancellation fee will apply. Cancellation outside of this time will receive a full refund (where a deposit only was paid, you will forfeit this deposit)

Don’t forget, if you do change the main driver, the new driver needs to present all the required documentation when picking up the hire car.

Most car hire companies require you to have held a full driving licence for at least 2 years, some however will allow you to hire a car having only held a full licence for 1 year.

Driver / licence requirements can be seen under ‘Important Information’ and ‘Driver’ at the quote stage or on your terms and conditions.
