P Plate Car Rental Australia

We’re often asked if you can rent a car with P Plate (provisional license) in Australia and whilst most rental agents unfortunately do not accept a provisional license, that’s not the case for all and we’re delighted to say that we can arrange car rental for P Plate and provisional license holders in Australia with certain restrictions.

What car rentals agents allow P Plate / Provisional License

The good news for P Plate (provisional license) holders is that you have a choice of rental agents who will accept a P plate license and allow you to rent a car, as there is healthy competition in the market prices remain competitive. Most drivers holding a P1 or P2 license will be under 25 and will also incur a young driver surcharge (see our under 25 car hire discount for more detail) in addition to any other terms set out. Rental agent terms do vary by supplier so it’s worth checking for your specific rental requirements, however the following table outlines those agents that do allow P plate car rentals in Australia.

Do you need to display a P Plate on rental car?

Yes, if you hold a provisional license (P1 or P2), you are required to display this on a rental car. The driver is responsible for ensuring that the plate is appropriately displayed. Take care not to scratch or damage the paintwork of the rental car as you’ll be liable for any repair costs and don’t forget to remove your P plate from the rental car when you hand it back.

Can I use my Provisional License outside of Australia?

Unfortunately not, car rental agents will only accept a full driving license when renting a car outside of Australia.

If your insured on your Ps and have a not at fault accident in Australia, all the car rental companies will give you a car regardless of p1 or p2. Only time it's hard is If you want an occasionally rental, your best bet would be try Stix I've never had a problem with them.

Just wanted to correct a false statement here, many car rental companies outside Australia, will accept a provisional license. They may say on their site that they only accept full license holders, however if that full license is equivalent to a provisional license here, if you ring them up they will most likely say that it is fine. For instance in the UK, you go from your learner license to full license, so our provisional license will be equivalent. What most car rental companies really care about is the age of the driver.
