Regular travellers to Berlin, Germany’s capital, must be wondering what happened to the promised wonderful new Brandenburg Airport that was planned to replace Berlin’s existing Tegel and Schonefeld Airports. A year ago, passengers booked on flights in June to either Tegel or Schonefeld would have been told to expect last minute changes to their flights as Brandenburg was due to open on or around the third.

The New Doha International Airport is in the news again, this time though for nothing more worrying than a change of name. Previously unimaginatively christened to distinguish it from the old Doha Airport, it will now follow the majority of airports in the Middle East in being named after a country’s current or former ruler. In this case, it’s the current Emir of Qatar; Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, giving the airport the name of Hamad International Airport.

Whilst no official opening date for the first commercial passenger flight has been announced, the executive chairman of the airport management company; Dubai Aviation City Corporation has hinted in an interview with the Middle Eastern edition of Business Traveller magazine that the inaugural flight may well happen well before the original projected date of the end of this year.  Being suitably vague, Khalifa Al Zaffin said that the first flight may land there at any time between the first and third quarters of 2013.
