Catered Ski Chalet or Self Catering? Which Is Best For You?

Going on a catered chalet ski holiday can sometimes seem a little expensive but the snow traveller will hopefully show you the many benefits of a catered holiday, and surprisingly what great value it can be. Do you normally go on a self catered ski holiday and have to arrange everything?

Let’s rewind a little!

Imagine you have booked your first catered ski holiday, from the moment you book your chalet holiday, you will have everything organised for you. You will be picked up from the airport, so no need to worry about which car hire desk you need to visit or whether or not you have the required pHD to fit snow chains!

Normally within 2 hrs, you will be relaxing in your accommodation, without even the need to know where the kettle is, how the cooker works, where the supermarket is etc.! This time you are going to be cooked for and not just one course, most chalets offer four courses every night! Followed by tea and coffee in front of the log fire.

Your chalet hosts will organise your ski passes to be waiting for you at the chalet, so no more waiting in long queues at the ski pass office! This means more time skiing.

Ski hire can also be a time consuming process if you have not organised it for your arrival. Again, this is something your chalet host will organise! They will drive you to their recommended ski outlet and more often than not, be able to offer you a great discount! Even better, some chalets have the ski company come straight to your accommodation!

If your chalet is not within walking distance of the ski lifts, most chalet hosts will drive you to the slopes and pick you up. They may also offer you a couple days of free ski guiding if you are not familiar with the area, which means no need for a ski map for the first few days! After a great day skiing, you will be collected from the slopes and returned back to the chalet, where afternoon tea and cake will be waiting for you, what more could you ask for!

The evening is then your time to sit down and enjoy dinner with wine (no need to bring your own!).  No cooking, no washing, no stacking the dishwasher! Just relax, enjoy the night and talk about your days skiing. And the best part is you get to do it all again the next day!

So next time you book your holiday, think about the pros of these extras, included in the price of your chalet holiday. When you take this into account, you are not looking at the cost being that much more than a self catered holiday, and it’s definitely worth taking the stress out of your holiday. At the end of the day you will get to relax and spend more time skiing!
