Sharjah Mini Guide

Sharjah in a Nutshell
Sharjah is the 3rd largest of the seven emirates in the UAE. It is unique in that is has sea coasts to both the west and east. The city is known for its ancient culture and oriental atmosphere and overlooks the Persian Gulf.

How do I get There?
You can fly into Sharjah International Airport from some areas of the Middle East. The airport is less than 10 minutes from the city. The easiest option is probably to fly into Dubai International Airport and drive or take a taxi from there, it takes about 15 minutes avoiding rush hour. In the city you can use the local bus service offered by Sharjah Transport.

So, Is There Much to see There?
Sharjah is the cultural capital of the UAE and well known for its heritage and culture. Art and natural history can also be seen there. To really get a feel for the city you should visit the Heritage Area, where you can visit the Souq al Arsah, the oldest souk in the country – stop at the coffee shop and have some mint tea and dates. Al Hisn Fort and Museum is close by and you can discover more about the social history of Sharjah. Also interesting is the Museum of Islamic Civilisation, where you will see artefacts from Mecca and many types of Qur’an. A selection of Arabic handicrafts are also on display there. In the Art Area, you will find the Sharjah Art Museum featuring many works of contemporary art.

What Else can I do?
If you are feeling adventurous try jet skiing in Khalid Lagoon – its very popular there. Not your thing? Take a boat cruise from Al Qasba instead.
Will I Find any Bargains?
Blue Souq is the place to go for something unusual. It is an interesting but chaotic shopping centre with 2 floors, the first floor has designer clothing shops, but the second floor has carpets and curios from all over the world. You must haggle for the best price! The Sahara Centre and Sharjah Mega Mall are where you will find all the international brands and maybe pick up a few bargains at a shopping festival.

What’s Good to eat?
Of course for a snack you should try ‘schawarma’, a flatbread stuffed with chicken and salad and a spicy garlic sauce, it is typical street food in the Middle East. For a tasty and inexpensive meal go to Al Shami Restaurant, they have a good selection of Arabic and Middle Eastern dishes. Need something a little special? Head for the Corniche and look for the old traditional dhow boats, there you will find the Sharjah Dhow Restaurant, they specialise in seafood and Arabic influenced dishes.

Can I see Anything Outside the City?
Sharjah Desert Park is worth visiting, they have over 1000 different animal species there. You will see some of the unique flora and fauna of the Arabian Desert and there is a museum and wildlife centre for you to visit

Sharjah is unlike its two big neighbours as it is steering away from a city massed with skyscrapers. Instead Sharjah has retained some uniqueness in maintaining and restoring old buildings and trying to keep new ones in tune with the old.

Whilst there, visit the Al-Hisn Fort, lovingly restored under the control of the Sheikh. Then take your Sharjah hire car to the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation for a fascinating journey through the history of this much misunderstood civilisation. Finally, make time for retail therapy at the Souk Al-Arsah, the biggest souk in the Sharjah Emirate.
