Dubai Mini Guide
Dubai in a Nutshell
Dubai is a city built in the desert and one of the 7 emirates in the UAE. It is well known for its iconic buildings, incredible skyline and being one of the shopping capitals of the world. It is a very popular destination for tourists who like to enjoy a short break and explore everything the city has to offer where cheap car hire in Dubai is a great help. It is also a popular stop-over for travellers worldwide.
How to get There
The easiest way is to fly into Dubai International Airport as over 200 destinations fly there, so it is easily accessible from most parts of the world. The airport is close to the city, so it easy to get a taxi or use the metro (red line) to get there and explore the rest of the area. The Big Bus Company has a hop on hop off service stopping at attractions all around the city, if you prefer to take a bus. Dubai car rental offers excellent value whether collecting from the Airport or Dubai itself.
What can I see There?
You must visit the worlds tallest building the Burj Khalifa, it stands 828m tall and has 124 floors. You can go the visitors centre and take a lift to the observation deck, about half way up the tower. Just under the tower at Dubai Mall, you can shop till you drop but do take a look at the incredible fountains and the huge aquarium is a must see all easily accessible using car hire in Dubai.
To discover more about the Old Dubai, go to the Bastakiya district where you will find the Dubai Museum and Heritage Village. Next, head for the Spice Market and Gold Souk for a taste of times past and maybe a few bargains. Look out for the Abras and Dhows on Dubai Creek, you can take a trip on one if you are feeling brave!
For a relaxing day out, head out to the Dubai Marina, you can enjoy the skyline and wander around the shops and cafes here. There are 2 walks around the marina, so you can take a leisurely stroll and browse the weekend open market there. Madinet Jumeirah is also worth a visit for the spectacular views over the Burj Al Arab Hotel. You can shop in the souk and take a boat trip on its waterways. Use car hire Dubai to travel between attractions.
What Else can I do?
Take advantage of cheap car hire in Dubai to explore beyond the bounds of the city. How about taking a Desert Safari? You can take a trip in to the desert and then relax with a traditional Bedouin meal and some belly dancing. For some action, you can watch a camel race at Dubai Race Track or go skiing at the Mall of the Emirates. If it is too hot for you, spend a day at Wild Wadi Water Park and enjoy its lagoons and waterfalls. For something special, take a 40 minute sea plane tour and see many of the highlights of the city, including the World and Palm developments.
Dare I Mention Shopping?
Dubai is a shopping paradise – there are over 70 malls in the city, including the largest in the world, the Dubai Mall with 1200 shops and car parking for your Dubai car rental. You will be surprised by the malls in that they often have themes, taking inspiration from different countries and ancient history, sometimes you are not sure if you are in a theme park, museum or shopping mall! If you get the chance, visit a souk in the old town and buy gold or textiles for the best bargains.
Will I Like the Food?
Everyone’s taste is catered for, whether you want to try Arabic take away or fine dining and even fast food you’ll find it there! Local take away food is a good cheap option, try falafel and schawarma. You will also find an abundance of Indian vegetarian food including curries and samosas. At Legends Steak House on Dubai Creek Golf Course, you can enjoy a meal at a waterside setting. The JW Steakhouse at the JW Marriott Hotel is popular with expats for a hearty meal. For something special, use your rental car in Dubai and try the fine dining at Atmosphere Restaurant on level 122 at the Burj Khalifa.
Is There any Night Life?
Certainly! You can kick back at Barasti Bar at the Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Resort, this beach bar is on 3 levels and attracts expats and locals alike. Make a reservation at the Burj Al Arab Hotel’s Sky View Bar and enjoy some tapas or canapés and a cocktail. Other popular bars are the 360 Bar and Rock Bottom.
Any Events I Should see?
If you like sport, you shouldn’t miss the Race to Dubai golf tournament or the Dubai World Cup horse race. Try and bag a bargain at the Dubai shopping festivals held in from February to April. You can see the latest in aerospace at the Dubai Air Show or walk the red carpet at the Dubai International Film Festival.
- Understandably, Dubai's off season is in the peak of summer when temperatures exceed 50C. If you want to save money, it's a good time to go as the tourist board is trying to encourage summer travel with discount deals on hotels and tourist attractions. You'll save at the Wild Wadi Water Park, the ice rink, SEGA Republic and the aquarium and underwater zoo. See http://domore.definitelydubai.com/ for details.
