How do I get to Ancona?
There are many flights into Ancona Airport which is only eight miles from the city. The largest operator there is Ryanair who fly direct from London Stansted. From Ancona Airport to the city is quick and easy by a variety of means. With new routes being added to the airport's schedule, pre-booking hire cars at Ancona Airport has become essential or you risk being left stranded at the airport.

What’s the Airport Like?
It’s fairly small yet packs a range of facilities into the building. Built in the 30s it has undergone several upgrades and enlargements and today is a modern airport with good links to the surrounding region. It’s often used by travellers who want to get to the Balkans or Greece yet who want to enjoy the low cost flights offered by Ryanair to Ancona.

What can I Expect When I Arrive at Ancona?
It’s a relatively quick transfer from the plane to the arrivals hall where your baggage might take a little longer to arrive. Passport control is efficient however and you’ll soon be ready to continue your onward journey. If you need help around the airport or have queries regarding transport or accommodation, there is a small help desk in the arrivals hall. There is a bank, Banco Marche as a standalone in the arrivals hall which can exchange currency as well as having an ATM. Onward travel by public transport can be a little complicated as there are a variety of buses and bus routes. If you need to get to the ferry port, a dedicated shuttle is available whilst another shuttle and local bus will take you into Ancona centre. Taxis are available too from just outside the arrivals hall and with a short journey into town, the fare is reasonable. The car rental desks are easily found and after completing the final paperwork your journey into Ancona is simple.

What About When it’s Time to go Home?
The airport can offer assistance to people with reduced mobility or sensory impairment but you need to give them two days’ notice where possible. You’ll find no end of things to keep you occupied whilst waiting for your plane. There are a handful of shops in the departure area including a perfumery, an eyewear shop, a shop selling Italian wine and spirits and a duty free shop with the usual goods. If you’re hungry you have a choice with a small bar selling drinks and light hot and cold snacks. There’s also a self-service café selling very much the same kind of food but if you want to splash out, try the Marco Polo which serves regional dishes, beautifully presented and in comfortable surroundings. After your meal you can use the free Wi-Fi facility in the departure lounge.

Ancona is found on the Adriatic coast of Italy and sells itself as central for locations such as Venice, Florence and Tuscany. A hire car is essential if you are to use it as a base to explore the region but within a short distance you’ll find such sights as Saint Ciriaco Cathedral.

It sits on one of the city’s hills and here the body of the saint is visible in his coffin for those who are interested. Heading down to the harbour you’ll see the Arch of Trajan, a commemorative structure that straddles the causeway on the harbour wall.
