Bonn Mini Guide

It was home to one of the most famous Germans in history, the great composer Ludwig Van Beethoven and it is still to this day a cultural capital where many exhibitions and conferences are held.

Bonn is located very close to the city of Cologne and the airport which serves these areas is Cologne – Bonn. The numbers of passengers using this airport has more than doubled recently thanks in part to the presence of low cost routes there by carriers such as Ryanair and TuiFly. In fact you can get rock bottom priced flights to Cologne – Bonn from places such as New York and when you combine this with the low rates of Rhino rental cars (starting from £11 per day) then travellers to Cologne or Bonn would have a lot of extra spending money for their trip. Car rental in this part of the world allows you to explore some of the delightful countryside which is to found along side the banks of the River Rhine. When you have made the short drive to Bonn there is much to see and do. Try taking a stroll past the Schaumberg Palace which is where the German chancellor used to have his office or the Villa Hammerschmidt where the German president used to live before his offices were moved to Berlin.

One sight which must be seen is the museum chronicling the life of Beethoven. It is open most days between 10am and 6pm. His music is also celebrated with a month long concert dedicated to all his best work. This concert often involves the Beethoven orchestra of Bonn. Ironically considering all this reverence, Beethoven was reputed to have actually hated Bonn. But there are numerous other museums too which display aspects of German culture and history. There is even an Egyptian museum which is administered by the University of Bonn. If you are looking for refreshments after your excursions then Bonn has plenty of nice cafes where you can get coffee and cake of better quality than the usual fare served in the global chains. At night there is a decent choice of night clubs too playing music from live bands and DJs in a variety of styles such as funk rock and house music.

Latest Update from Bonn:

05/05/12 - On the 25th May, you'll find that all the churches are open in the city for Bonn's 5th 'Church Night'. The churches, from all denominations, will host concerts, exhibitions and more, enabling you to enjoy the architecture as well as some free entertainment.

Bonn is a small city but with lots to see and do. It was the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven and whilst there you can view the Beethoven statue or visit the Beethoven Museum which is found in his former home.

From there take your hire car across the city to see the Kurfürstliches Schloss, formerly a castle and now a beautiful part of the University of Bonn. Finally, head to the Botanischer Garten, a beautifully laid out botanical garden where a specimen of an Arum lily set the world record for height.
