Washington Dulles Airport Mini Guide

Why Should I Visit Washington?
Apart from it being the capital of the USA and the spiritual home of the struggle of early Americans to build their own republic, it has a fascination range of sights for the tourist. The focal point of everything that is Washington is the National Mall which contains almost all the monuments for which the city is famous and is imperiously and benignly looked over by the statue of Abraham Lincoln. Here too you’ll find some of the most highly respected museums in the world including the collection of Smithsonian museums. Elsewhere, the city which used to be the crime capital of the States has cleaned up its act and now offers safe, fun and exciting entertainment for all.

What’s the Best way of Getting to Washington DC?
Of the three airports that serve the capital, Dulles, Baltimore and Ronald Reagan, Dulles Airport is the biggest and with the widest range of destinations. It’s quite a trek into the city, over 26 miles from the centre, but access is made easier by a number of bus routes that go either to the nearest metro stop or directly to the city centre. Plans are underway to extend the metro system Silver Line to the airport with work due to finish in 2016.

What is the Airport Like?
The airport is stunning in its architecture and despite some difficulties with adapting its original design to the strains of modern day flying; it remains a very efficient airport offering a good passenger experience together with many facilities.

What Should I Expect When I Land at Dulles?
You are likely to disembark via air bridges before joining a ‘people mover’ system to get you down the very long concourse to security and immigration. Whilst interconnecting concourses have now been installed, some passengers have the unusual experience of being moved to their connecting flight on a ‘mobile lounge’ which looks a little like part of a plane’s fuselage. Once in the main terminal, things get simpler with three information booths in the centre of the hall should you need help or directions. All the facilities you need are in the area from baggage reclaim to the car rental desks. You can get cash from one of the banks or currency exchanges or use the ATMs. Public transport access is also found immediately outside the terminal doors.

What are the Facilities Like for Departing Passengers?
As you’d expect from a large international airport, the range of shops, restaurants and things to do at the airport is extensive.  Once you’ve dropped off your luggage, there are over 100 shops and restaurants for you to spend your last few hours and your last few dollars in. Top international designers together with high street names grace the stores and eating options range from a la carte restaurants to delicious pizza and take away outlets. Finally, you’ll be able to access the internet via your laptop or netbook on the airport’s complementary Wi-Fi system.
