A major tourist attraction throughout the Mediterranean is the annual appearance of turtles that come to breed on the sandy beaches of the almost completely land-locked sea. Turtles are one of nature’s greatest migratory species, travelling thousands of miles each year between the feeding grounds of the Caribbean and the breeding grounds of the Mediterranean. Of the world’s turtle species, the majority of those revisiting the Med, year after year, are Green Turtles or Loggerhead Turtles. Occasionally, you may find the giant Leatherback Turtles but these are very rare.

Predictably the first 0-0 draw of the entire tournament was played out by the 2 most defensive sides in Europe. Italy and England failed to score in 120 minutes and their fate was decided by the dreaded penalty shoot out. Whilst high hopes were there and the team reported to have been practising penalties in training all tournament, the 'flip of a coin' penalty shoot out ended what many have reported as a 'successful' 2012 Euro campaign by the England camp.

A new law that comes into force in July 2012 will require any car travelling on French roads to have a breathalyzer kit within the car. If you are planning a trip to France, whether driving your own car from the UK or elsewhere in Europe, or renting a car in France and do not have a breathalyzer in the car you will face an 11 Euro on the spot fine should you be stopped by the Gendarmerie (French police).

With the group stages done and dusted, the wheat has well and truly been sorted from the chaff, however as with any major sporting event there is always some collateral damage in the shakedown. The big surprise is the loss of Holland, beaten finalists at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Following a shock defeat at the hands of Denmark in the opening round, Holland always had their backs to the wall and with Germany and Portugal playing well in their group, the writing was, quite honestly on the wall long before the final whistle of their pointless trip to Poland and Ukraine was blown.

There is still hope for some teams who have got off to a poor start and suffered first rounds defeats, however the future is not looking very bright for pre-tournament hot tips Holland. Following the unexpected defeat to a very organised Danish Team they suffered a huge setback at the hands of another solid Germany victory. Leaving the Dutch national team languishing at the foot of the table with no points from 2 games is a very unusual position to be in indeed. Portugal showed their intent with a victory over Denmark leaving Holland needing to beat Portugal by 2 clear goals in the last group game and hope Germany secure a win against the Danes.

The name Tombs of the Kings to most people would signify an ancient burial site in Egypt and many confuse the site just outside Paphos in Cyprus with the Egyptian Valley of the Kings. The Valley of the Kings may be grander and on the face of it, more important than the Tombs of the Kings, but the Paphos site has much to recommend it in historical and archaeological terms and in many ways is not dissimilar to its more important Egyptian near namesake.

With the first round of group matches in the bag, it's been an interesting tournament so far including a stalemate between tournament favourites Spain and Italy, a reliably solid if not predictable German 1-0 victory and a major upset as Holland fell victim to a lowly ranked Denmark.
