Mini Guide to Ohio:
Why Ohio?
Ohio is a much underrated American State with a variety of landscapes, great history and welcoming people. The state was part of the ‘Underground Railroad’ route which helped slaves who had escaped from southern states, to get to a new life in
Canada. John Brown and Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin, lived in the state and campaigned against slavery. The state was also the birthplace of the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong, and the Wright Brothers who lived and worked in Dayton.
How do I get to Ohio?
The only direct European flight goes with Delta from
Paris CDG to
Cincinnati daily. Travellers from other European countries can either connect in Paris or fly to any of the east coast airports and get a connection there. Within Ohio, there are several large airports so getting to any part of it shouldn’t present problem.
When I’m There, What Should I Do?
The Ohio countryside is very attractive with flat plains leading to the shores of Lake Erie. The lake has several fairly big islands which belong to Ohio and on which you can stay in hotels and guest houses, visit island vineyards or laze on quiet beaches. One island, called ‘Put-In Bay, is renowned for the wild parties held there each summer. There are more beaches to be found along the mainland shore of the lake too.
Moving south and east the terrain changes to hills as the Appalachians approach and you can spend time driving or walking through Cuyahoga Valley National Park where you’ll see the Buckeye trees for which the state is famous. The big cities of Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus are also great places to be based. Cincinnati has many sights that remind you of
New York as parts of the city were used as the inspiration for ‘Big Apple’ buildings such as the Empire State Building and Brooklyn Bridge.
What Makes Good Souvenirs From Ohio?
You might be tempted to take home some of the Buckeye nuts as gifts but be warned, they’re poisonous. Instead get some of the buckeye candies that are made to look like the nut but instead are chocolate and peanut butter and said to be delicious. Buckeye wood is used extensively and you may be able to pick up some gifts made from the wood.
