San Francisco is the centrepiece of the Bay Area and is a major city in
California. Home of the world famous Golden Gate Suspension Bridge, which was opened in May 1937. Since its completion it has been surpassed in span length by eight other bridges but it is still gazed upon in awe by visitors. It is still listed as one of Americas Favourite pieces of architecture.
Split into fourteen Districts, San Francisco has everything you need to enjoy this marvellous city. The Golden Gate District is where you will find stunning neighbourhoods with views which will take your breath away. The rolling streets which seem to go nowhere take you on a rollercoaster ride and have been used in many movies and TV series.
To enjoy the streets to the maximum, it is advisable to hire a car, which can be done with ease form the Airport. Doing so will ensure that you don’t miss a thing. From the Fisherman's Wharf, which is a beautiful waterfront neighbourhood, which is home to many fine fish food restaurants and souvenir stores, where you can pick up a bargain to remind you of your visit.
From the Wharf you can take the ferry and visit Alcatraz Island, which is highly recommended. A cable car ride is also a must, where you will enjoy the panoramic views, which are immensely picturesque. The climate here is very mild even in the winter months.
San Francisco has three main airports, the first is, San Francisco International, which is approximately ten miles to the south of the city itself, so hiring a rental car is the easy option and gives you a little more freedom to explore.
Oakland International is located in the East Bay and
Mineta San Jose International is around an hour to the south of the city.

Driving is an unusual experience in San Francisco due to the steep hills which dominate the city and Lombard Street is known as the most twisted street in the world. Drivers also need to pay attention to the attractive street cars which residents use for public transport. The city is also split into many diverse neighbourhoods – you can get excellent Italian food in the North Beach district or find out where Bruce Lee grew up in Chinatown.
