San Francisco Airport Mini Guide
Why Should I Visit San Francisco?
It’s a more refined sister to
Los Angeles, more laid back and fun loving and with so much to hold the attention of the tourist. San Francisco Bay is stunning, especially as the city appears through the mist as the morning sun heats up the day. The Golden Gate Bridge is considered to be one of the seven wonders of the modern world and is the most photographed bridge in the world. In the city, you have the energy and culture of Chinatown, almost a city by itself, and the bustle of Fisherman’s Wharf. Then there are the steep roads of the city immortalised in countless TV car chases.
What’s the Best way of Getting Into the City?
Thirteen miles away is California’s second biggest airport, San Francisco International. Flights from all over the world land here, including ones from
London Heathrow operated by BA, Virgin and United. Transport into the city can be by rental car; perfect if you’re going to explore the city and the bay area, the train, called BART, that links the airport with the city, and buses or taxis.
What is the Airport Like?
There are four terminals with Terminal 3 dedicated to United flights and the fourth terminal, simply called the International Terminal, dedicated to all overseas flights. The terminals are arranged in a ring with some having disembarkation directly into the terminal whilst others disembark onto concourses. The airport has a rolling programme of upgrades and work has just been completed on Terminal 2 bringing it up to modern standards.
What’s the Procedure When I Arrive in San Francisco?
International arrivals will disembark via a jet bridge into one of two concourses and then use the moving walkway to get to the security check desks. From there you’ll emerge into the main hall. The airport seems to expect a lot of confused passengers as there are eight information desks in the hall, all able to direct you to other services or offer advice on transport. If needed, there’s also a tourist information desk. In the main hall you’ll find a bank and currency exchange bureau and ATMs for quick cash. To collect a rental car you’ll need to take the AirTrain Blue Line to the car rental centre where all the final formalities will be completed. If using public transport, the BART railway station is found on the lower level of the international terminal.
Will I be Just as Impressed When I Leave San Francisco?
The airport has worked hard to make the experience for departing passengers a memorable one. Friendly check-in staff deal with your bags and tickets and then direct you to the shopping and eating area of the airport. You can browse through many different shops both before and after security, many top names have outlets at the airport and you’ll be spoilt for choice over where to spend your last few dollars. If you want to eat at the airport there is a great range of restaurants should you feel hungry. For a special treat to relax you prior to your flight you can visit the airport’s spa and if you’ve got children who need to be entertained, take them to the airport’s aquarium!
San Francisco Airport (airport code SFO) is an international airport which is the second biggest facility in California. It serves the city of San Francisco and the wider Bay Area which includes the Golden Gate Bridge. That monument and Height Ashbury are just two of the sites that customers use San Francisco Airport car rentals to see.
As SFO is on the US Interstate 101 this makes this perfect base for a road trip along the stunning Californian coast. The airport itself is also impressive as not only does it boast lots of shops and amenities but there is a medical clinic and a place of assistance for lost travellers. SFO even has its very own museum in Terminal 2 which holds special exhibitions.
