Where is Huelva?
Huelva is a city in Andalusia in southern Spain. It is located on the Gulf of
Cadiz and the Costa de la Luz. The River Tinto and River Odiel meet at Huelva and it is famous for its port and maritime connections. It has lots of pretty plazas to explore and plenty of history to discover.
A Little History
Huelva became important in the 15th century due to the discovery of America. Columbus set sail with his 3 ships from Puerto de Palos de la Fronter in the city. The citiy’s main industry since Roman times has been silver and copper mining, there are still copper mines there today.
How do I Travel There?
The nearest airports to Huelva are
Faro and
Seville, from there you can drive or take a train. There is a local bus service in the city, but most attractions are within walking distance.
Places of Interest
The Santuario de la Neustra Senora Cinta is a 15th century gothic mudejar church situated on a hill overlooking the city. Another interesting building is that of Palacio de las Conchas, which has stained glass windows, a tower and balconies and is now a tourist information centre. You could also visit Gran Teatro de Huelva a neoclassical building that is used as a cultural centre for the city.
What is There to do?
Enjoy a day in Moret Park – sit by the lake and have a picnic or barbeque, then go for a walk. If you are interested in the mining heritage of the city, visit Museo de Huelva and the unusual Queen Victoria district, an English style suburb built for the mining community here.
What can I buy?
You can buy your Flamenco gear at La Fabrica de Flamenco on Calle la Palma. You must browse and taste your way through the El Carmen food market, in the city.
What’s the Food Like?
The restaurants in the city specialise in traditional dishes and seafood, try the unusual white prawns here. Tapas bars are good for sampling small dishes of local flavour, look out for the Jamones de Jabugo, a local cured ham. Hunting is very popular in the area, so you may see some game dishes on the menu, in season. The wines and brandies have a good reputation and a must try, is the cherry liquer.
Are There any Festivals?
Huelva has many festivals during the spring and summer months. The Carnival in February and March is a national tourist attraction. On the 3rd August, the Fiesta Columbinas is held celebrating Columbus’s voyage with Latin American dancing. Another one to mention is the La Virgen del Carmen in August.
