The site was formerly RAF Luqa and hence the airport has inherited several more casual names, including Luqa Airport or Valletta Airport. It has more recently won several awards for excellence and quality, is recognised as one of the top 20 airports in the World and has therefore has truly earned its formal title as Malta International Airport - a fantastic place to begin your visit to this historically rich and popular Mediterranean island.
Being a main gateway to this highly popular tourist destination, the airport welcomes flights by more than 20 airlines from numerous cities around Europe such as London Gatwick
, London Heathrow
as well as the Middle East and into North Africa. During 2010 passenger flow exceeded 3.5 million and it is unsurprisingly a hub for Malta Airlines, as well as Ryanair.
The airport site boasts a colourful past, entirely appropriate for the historical island that it serves. Today, excellent facilities include a wide range of shops and outlets; there is an automated money exchange, ATMs, a Post Office and a 24 hour currency exchange desk. To wine and dine choose from several restaurants or cafes, including the new Jet Express food court in the departure area. Stay connected with free Wi-Fi throughout. If you are a VIP, enjoy the offerings of La Valette Club. This includes The Valette Lounge along with meeting and conferencing facilities. The airport is quite interestingly home for the Maltese Met Office which provides national meteorological services for both aviation and public means.
