Malta Airport Mini Guide

Welcome to Malta International Airport
Located just outside the capital Valletta, this airport serves the entire main island and archipelago on its own.  The site was formerly RAF Luqa and hence the airport has inherited several more casual names, including Luqa Airport or Valletta Airport.  It has more recently won several awards for excellence and quality, is recognised as one of the top 20 airports in the World and has therefore has truly earned its formal title as Malta International Airport - a fantastic place to begin your visit to this historically rich and popular Mediterranean island.

Happy Landings
Being a main gateway to this highly popular tourist destination, the airport welcomes flights by more than 20 airlines from numerous cities around Europe such as London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Belfast, Rome and Berlin as well as the Middle East and into North Africa.  During 2010 passenger flow exceeded 3.5 million and it is unsurprisingly a hub for Malta Airlines, as well as Ryanair.
Award-Winning Facilities
The airport site boasts a colourful past, entirely appropriate for the historical island that it serves.  In 1992 it was extensively refurbished to offer good modern passenger facilities and has undergone several upgrades since.  Today, excellent facilities include a wide range of shops and outlets; there is an automated money exchange, ATMs, a Post Office and a 24 hour currency exchange desk.  To wine and dine choose from several restaurants or cafes, including the new Jet Express food court in the departure area.  Stay connected with free Wi-Fi throughout.  If you are a VIP, enjoy the offerings of La Valette Club.  This includes The Valette Lounge along with meeting and conferencing facilities.  The airport is quite interestingly home for the Maltese Met Office which provides national meteorological services for both aviation and public means.
What if I Have Reduced Mobility?
There are good facilities for you, including adapted toilets, ramps and telephones.  There are reserved spaces in the car park and wheelchairs or other assistance for getting to and from the ground to your plane are available upon request from the Customer Services Centre.

Onward Bound

There are excellent public transport routes to your onward destination, including numerous bus routes and fixed-rate taxis, as well as private driver hire.  With so much to see and do on the island, car hire is strongly recommended for truly making the most of your visit.  If you have hired a car through Rhino, you can collect this in the "Welcome Hall" of the airport.  Whether you wish to visit the historic capital city, tour around a few of the inland towns, or make your way to the picturesque shores, onward routes are very good and signposts are conveniently numerous and helpful.

This is the only place you can fly to in Malta and you’ll be joining millions who go there to experience the rich history, friendly people and the beautiful beaches. From the airport, the whole island is easily accessible.

First stop should be the rather dull looking St John’s Cathedral but which inside is absolutely stunning. The interior was designed by knights of separate lodges who wanted to outdo each other for splendour in their chapels. The floor of the cathedral is equally ornate, housing the tombs of the knights themselves.
