Car was ok, but

Car was ok, but not that clean, a few scrapes and older than I would expect for a hire car. Price was very competitive, but just expected a new car. The whole fleet looked a little 'tired' so perhaps that is just normal, but when I hire in Spain, cars are always like new.

Jordan Mini Guide

The development of modern Jordan has been dominated by one man for over 30 years - its ruler King Hussein. His courage has seen the country through constant political crises. Jordan remains a front line state in relation to its neighbour Israel and among the Arab countries, no other has shown a greater interest in negotiating a lasting settlement to the Arab Israeli conflict.

King Hussein allowed refugee militants from the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) to raid Israel from bases in Jordan. However, the guerrillas defied the government's authority and Hussein's army acted in 1971 and expelled them from the country. The bitter conflict that ensued ended with the expulsion or imprisonment of the guerrillas until Hussein declared a general amnesty for all political prisoners and exiles in 1973. The following year, Jordan acknowledged the PLO as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinians.Today, over half of Jordan's population is Palestinian. Many live in the ten UN refugee camps. All have been granted Jordanian citizenship and all take a full part in the political and economic life of the kingdom.

The rich Arab states, such as Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, give substantial economic aid to strengthen Jordan as an Arab country bordering Israel. The recent civil war in Lebanon has allowed Jordan's capital AMMAN to replace the Lebanese capital, BEIRUT, as the financial centre of the region. Jordanians have a reasonably high standard of living and 70% of adults are literate. Although they have no oil they refine it, and have an efficient system of intensive agriculture.

Only one-fifth of Jordan is fertile enough to be farmed; the rest is desert. The fertile areas include the disputed West Bank and the valley of the Jordan. To the east lie the hills and mountains of Biblical history which are also fertile. All these areas have cool winters with moderate rainfall.
