Milan Train Station Mini Guide

Many people visit Italy for the stunning architecture but limit their visits to churches and palaces and ignore municipal buildings. That’s a great shame as they will miss out on splendid edifices such as Milan’s railway station. Thought of as comparable to New York’s Grand Central Station, the architecture here is breath-taking. At 200 metres wide and with vaulted ceilings reaching over 70 metres into the air it was the largest building of its type at the time.

Routes to and from Milan Central?
There are many high speed trains that connect to Milan Central including from Bologna, Turin, Genoa, Venice and Lecco together with international connections to the Swiss cities of Brig and Zurich. The trains are comfortable with a good range of facilities including food and beverages, newspapers and Wi-Fi.

Where is Milan Central Station?
It’s in the Piazza Duca d'Aosta, one of the main squares of Milan’s central business district and near the Pirelli Tower. If you’re looking for accommodation nearby, the five star Hotel Gallia has much to recommend it. From the station it’s a short walk to many of the attractions of the city but with a hire car you’ll be able to travel further afield.

What to do in Milan?
If you visit in winter then there’s a good chance you’ll be heading off to the Italian Alps for skiing. You can stay a couple of days at the Gallia then hire a car to get to the slopes. At other times of year it may be you’re visiting for the history – Milan has a great deal of Renaissance architecture and history linked to the Sforza family who made the city a powerful player in Italian politics or you may simply have come for the top quality shopping including some of the best designers in the world.

Facilities at Milan Central Station
There are quite a few shops in the station itself but they tend to be the kind you associate with stations and travel including newsagents, book stores, chemists etc. For a better range it’s best to leave the station and head into the streets around the station. There are a number of food outlets in the station including a passable restaurant which makes good use of its splendid surroundings to provide an atmospheric setting. There is Wi-Fi available too, making finalising business deals or checking emails a lot easier. The lost and found office is very busy considering that over 120m passengers pass through the station annually. Finally, if you need help there’s the station information desk or just ask one of the several staff members patrolling the station. Assistance is available for passengers with reduced mobility but the station appreciates some notice to be able to help more fully.
