Mykonos Airport Mini Guide

Why do People go to Mykonos?
It’s a fabulous island destination with much uniqueness that appeals to the seasoned traveller. It’s also one of the destinations favoured by gay travellers for its welcome of the gay community. Highlights of any visit include the Mykonos windmills, squat structures, ever pressed into action in the days when the island was a major flour and bread producer. The visitor also should see, and invariably photograph, the area known as Little Venice where the multi-coloured pastel houses are built directly on the waterline and rustic wooden balconies overhang the sea. Finally, at night, Mykonos wakes from its day long siesta to become a major clubbing and partying island up there with the likes of Ibiza, Faliraki and Agia Napa.

How do I get to Mykonos?
The island has its own airport receiving dozens of seasonal charter flights each week. The only scheduled flights come from Italy, Cyprus and from domestic airports. The airport is close to the town and there’s a host of ways of getting to your accommodation.

What’s Mykonos Airport Like?
It’s modern, sizeable and airy with good facilities for the traveller. The airport staff are enthusiastic and eager to help.

What can I Expect When I Arrive at the Airport?
The airport has two terminals, one for charter flights, the other for domestic scheduled. On disembarking at one of the ten stands you may need to walk to the terminal building or sometimes a coach is provided. Passport control can be a lengthy business at peak times but you are usually through in time to still wait for your baggage to be loaded onto the carousel. The airport has a very efficient and all-encompassing information desk which offers to help on many aspects of airport life as well as tourist and transport information. Transport to your accommodation can be by your tour operator transfer bus, local shuttle bus or by taxi. Be warned that some of the shuttle buses charge more than a taxi so ask at information for the best option. Car hire is a good option here, even if the island is quite small. The desks are quickly found in the arrivals hall and the staff are keen to get you on your way. There’s an ATM in the arrivals hall too if you need cash urgently.

What About When I Leave Mykonos?
The airport has enough to keep you happy whilst waiting for your flight. A reasonably sized duty free shop offers all you’d expect and there is a restaurant which prides itself on the quality and range of its hot and cold offerings. The airport doesn’t have Wi-Fi connectivity so after your meal and a quick jaunt around the shop you’ll have to amuse yourself until take off.

Latest Update from Mykonos Airport:

Mykonos is fascinating - and not just because of its hedonistic reputation. Yes it has beautiful beaches and a plethora of great clubs for when the sun goes down but there’s also the scenery. The island is famous for its windmills and a trip in your hire car out of the main town and into the country will reward you with very photogenic scenes.

Don’t forget to visit Panagia Parapotiani, an architectural conundrum, where the current church is built on top of the conjoined four older churches below. It’s one of the most photographed sights in Greece.
