Frankfurt Mini Guide

The German city of Frankfurt is considered Europe’s financial capital, and this city in the centre of the country is impressive to look at. Towering skyscrapers dominate the skyline of Frankfurt which is the capital of Hesse and home to the European Central Bank and the Frankfurt stock exchange. Millions of tourists visit every year to see its fantastic architecture where a futuristic new design is combined with a stunning old town of quaint charm. A good way to see the city is to walk along the banks of the Main River where you will see why Frankfurt has been given the nickname ‘Manhattan’.

Frankfurt Sky scrapers

In terms of things to do Frankfurt has many museums displaying everything from dinosaur bones to collections of leather. There are also many public parks and pleasant neighbourhoods to walk in while opera is a big draw for those who want to go out at night. To get in you will fly to Frankfurt Airport – Europe’s second largest where our car hire representatives can meet you and show you to your vehicle. Frankfurt is well connected to the rest of Germany by autobahn if you are planning on visiting more than one city.

Frankfurt River

Frankfurt Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world and second only to London Heathrow in terms of passenger numbers in Europe. You should book your Rhino vehicle well ahead of time to save you any delays having to queue. Lufthansa is based at Frankfurt and many other international airlines use the terminal including the low cost carrier Ryanair. In fact you can get to any major airport in any country in the world from Frankfurt. Although a third terminal is being built, currently Frankfurt only has two terminals. The first terminal is split into areas A, B and C but it can still get very congested.

To get to Frankfurt Airport from within Germany take the S-bahns S9 or S8 going towards Wiesbaden. When driving you should drive carefully and adhere to speed limits as the rules are strictly enforced. Never drink and drive, there is a zero tolerance policy. In terms of parking in the city of Frankfurt you should use the Parkhaus parking garages which do daily rates of up to 10 Euros. These are a good idea as they save you having to drive in the congested city centre where parking can be tricky.

Latest Update from Frankfurt:

20/3/17 – As of this month Ryanair will have a base at Frankfurt Airport. Frankfurt airport has recognised the need to provide low cost flights for its passengers. The airport had been the last of Europe’s major airports to not have a budget airline based with them.

06/05/12 - Until the end of June this year you'll get the rare chance to see the Tutankhamun Exhibition in the Knowledge Forum in the city. As well as the iconic exhibits there are also chances to take part in virtual digs to find yet more Egyptian treasure.

Frankfurt is a vibrant city, built on money, and it shows in the opulent skyscrapers that dot the Bankenviertel district. All these financial wizards need to be entertained and tourists benefit from a huge number of concerts and festivals, together with plenty of museums and art galleries for which reduced price entry can be gained with a 'Frankfurt Card'.

If you get the chance, visit the Old Opera House which was described as ‘Germany’s Most Beautiful Ruin’ before being renovated late last century. If you have hired a car in the city you can visit the Zeil, Frankfurt’s fabulous shopping precinct and in December, home to Germany’s largest Christmas market.
