Bremen Mini Guide

Situated in the north of Germany close to the city of Hamburg, Bremen is one of the country’s most important cities. Bremen was built on the banks of the River Weser many years ago as an independent city state and it is also close to the North Sea. Its main airport is Bremen Airport which flies throughout Germany and to some other European cities. Just over half a million people live in Bremen so the airport can get quite busy. Bremen has easy links with Hamburg on the Autobahn 1, and if you take this road and head south you will reach the city of Cologne.

The most visible tourist landmark in Bremen is its city hall, the Rathaus. This UNESCO World Heritage listed building was built in the 15th century and there are daily guided tours conducted there for tourists. Another impressive sight is the Cathedral of St Peter built in the 8th century. From there you can climb a tower and get a good look at the whole of Bremen for a small entry fee.

Bremen the Rathaus

Also definitely take a walk along the Böttcherstrasse, a street in which most of its buildings are built in an Art Noveau style including some museums and shops. If you want to pick up a gift or souvenir this is the area to do it and the products offered are of good quality.

Bremen Böttcherstrasse

A good place to stay in this part of town is the Hilton Böttcherstrasse if you can afford to spend a bit. For your money you get all the usual five star amenities such as a sauna, a swimming pool and a gym. The Böttcherstrasse has some decent establishments in which to eat too, though food is Bremen is typically German with cabbage and herring among the specialities. There are some fine fish restaurants however.

Meanwhile Bremen is where the world famous Becks beer is brewed so be sure to try some straight from the draught if you are a fan. If you have cash to splash and fancy staying somewhere truly unique head to the Hochzeitshaus at Wüste Stätte 5 which may well be the world’s smallest hotel as it only has one room. For the pleasure you will pay €350 for the first night and €230 for any subsequent nights. However, there are quite a few cheaper options for the traveller on a shoe string budget such as the Townside Hostel Bremen, the International Youth Hostel and the GastHaus Bremer Backpacker Hostel.

Bremen is a fascinating city in the north of Germany. Its charms lie in its old town with ornate medieval buildings and stunning statues. If history isn’t your thing then there’s the more eclectic attraction of the Beck’s Brewery tour.

Outside of town a hire car will get you to the Botanika, a nature museum which is paired with the city’s science museum. If you get the chance, drive down the banks of the Weser to the city’s port of Bremerhaven and explore the beaches of Germany’s North Sea coast.
