Kemi Airport Mini Guide
Kemi-Tornio Airport is very much a regional airport, miles from anywhere of note, it’s 4 miles from Kemi and 11 miles from Tornio. There’s plenty of parking given that there is only one airline that uses the airport and accordingly the price starts from €2 per day but you can pay more to park next to an engine warming post?? The airport has a petrol station and car wash should you feel like washing your car – be warned though not to use this facility in winter! Last year nearly 92,000 passengers passed through its small terminal using the one flight in and out each day.
How to get There
The only airline to fly here is Flybe Nordic from Helsinki
who operate a single flight each day with an extra flight in periods of high demand!
Next Step of the Journey
There is no public transport to the airport but there is a bus stop 700m from the terminal. A taxi ride there is preferable in the depths of winter or you and your luggage won’t be found until spring. The bus takes 15 minutes to get to Kemi town centre and 25 minutes to Tornio.
Taxis are readily available as is car hire at the airport. The desks are easily found in the small terminal and pre-booking is recommended to enable you to get a suitable car for the terrain. Driving to and from the airport is easy as there is only one main road, the E8, Tornio Valley Road, which runs along the Finnish/Swedish border.
There’s an airport information desk for general airport enquiries in the public area together with a stand with tourist information that can offer leaflets on attractions in the area. The information desk is only open around flight arrival and departure times.
Shops, Facilities and Services
There are no banking or exchange facilities in the airport as it is purely a domestic airport. The nearest banks can be found in Kemi and Tornio Shopping at Kemi-Tornio is limited to a small gift shop selling souvenirs of the region. As the airport serves domestic passengers only, there are no duty free shops here. Whilst limiting your choice, the single eating establishment at the airport called ‘Nimbus’ offers very decent fare from main meals such as steak or stews to lighter bites such as pizza, pasta, soups and sandwiches. Hot drinks and alcoholic beverages are also on offer. Persons requiring first aid should notify a member of the airport staff who will take you to a trained first aider. There are no Wi-Fi facilities at Kemi-Tornio Airport
Assistance is available for disabled travellers and the airport has done all it can to make things easier for passengers with reduced mobility but it is recommended that you inform your airline before travelling so that necessary steps can be taken to assist you. The airport conforms to EU law on disability provision.
