Kittila Airport Mini Guide

Why are you Taking me to Kittila?
Well, you love skiing and Levi, whilst not as well known as some of the central European resorts, is one of the top resorts for downhill and cross county skiing. The resort is just outside the city, walking distance if it wasn’t so cold, and rarely as crowded as other resorts. If you don’t fancy skiing then the area is fantastic for going on a snowmobile safari. Outside of the city there’s not much apart from open countryside so you’ll definitely feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. Finally, if you don’t bore easily, grab a plate and stand in a stream all day panning for gold. It seems that the region has one of the largest gold deposits in Europe.

How Will we get There?
There are a number of routes across Europe but the only UK route is FlyBe’s from Southampton. There are also seasonal routes to serve the winter sports scene from Bristol and Gatwick via Thomas Cook. The journey takes a little over three hours. Once at the airport, onward travel is quick and easy.

What is The Airport Like?
It’s small but modern and very close to the city. There are limited facilities here but as you won’t be in it long that doesn’t matter. If you need help or advice, there’s a public information desk that can help. Parking is plentiful and cheap if you’re being collected and there’s a bus service into the city and to other regional towns. In the summer, places on the buses must be reserved as it’s out of season. There are taxis from the airport too at a reasonable rate as the distance is short. Car hire is available at the airport but please book your car in advance to ensure you get the vehicle you want. The car hire desks are difficult to miss as the arrivals area is compact.

And Coming Home?
Once you’ve checked in there’s a decent restaurant called Tahdenlento which serves nice meals in comfortable surroundings. There’s also a small coffee concession for those that just want a drink. Shopping is limited to a small gift shop which serves as a duty free, selling a range of spirits, tobacco and chocolate. If you wanted to meet friends or hold a conference here, there’s a giant tepee outside seating fifty!

Latest Update from Kittila Airport:

Kittila is busiest in winter when thousands of enthusiastic skiers travel from all over northern and central Europe to ski the pristine slopes of Levi, just outside the city. It’s possible to walk to the start of the resort from the town but, in winter, a hire car makes the journey more comfortable.

Summer tourists are also attracted by thoughts of finding gold! A Canadian company has found commercially viable amounts locally and in summer months you’ll see some hardy folk panning in the rivers. Some even find small specks to take home!
