What’s the Story?
Dartford is near the River Darent from where its name is derived.  The old London to Dover road crossed there and so Darent and ford were combined to make Dartford.  Dartford’s industrial beginnings were around the River Darent and included brewing ales and beers plus the cleaning of wool called fulling.

What is of Interest?

Dartford has a lot of history attached to because of the Roman road from the South Coast to London and because of the town’s importance for pilgrims to Canterbury and the shrines of the continent.

Today much of the evidence of its historical past comes from its industrial heritage and the town museum details how the first paper mill in Britain was set up here using the water from the river. The Darent was also useful for other industries including fulling and what was then the country’s largest mustard processing factory!
