Maine is the most easterly of the United States of America and its proximity to the coast means it is famous for lobster. Much of Maine’s economy is based around fishing and the shellfish caught in Maine are so good that an annual lobster festival is even held there in late July / early August. Tourists are also drawn to Maine to go whale watching and the area is rich in all kinds of marine life.
Maine has 16 coastal counties including Greater Portland
, Hancock County and Cumberland County all of which overlook the Atlantic Ocean. Inland Maine has many beautiful areas of lakes and mountains such as the Highlands of Pentobscot County. There are even skiing good opportunities in Maine at the Sunday River ski resort.

which has the Maine state museum and Bangor which is known as the Queen city of Maine.
Maine is one of the least populated of the American states and you can go to wild areas such as the Great North Woods and not see another soul for miles. Other areas of natural beauty are the Arcadia National Park and the Baxter State Park.
The rocky coastline is also very scenic with many lighthouses making Maine a wonderful place to experience peaceful outdoor life and a temperate climate.
From Maine you can make the short journey north to the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec
while the American state of New Hampshire
is also easily accessible by car. To get to New Hampshire via a scenic route you can drive through the West Maine Lakes and Mountains.
