What is Bangor Like?
Bangor is an interesting city in the state of Maine and not far from the border with
Canada. It has seen action in history as the first American stop for the Arctic explorer Robert Peary for whom a welcome was prepared on his way back from the North Pole. It was there too in 1911 that the entire town burnt down but was thankfully rebuilt. In the Great War, a German infiltrator was caught trying to dynamite the rail bridge to the town and later that decade a train carrying over $100m of gold crossed the same bridge. The city’s wealth had been founded on lumber, only to be replaced by paper in the middle of the 20th century. Natural resources still play a part in the city’s economy today.
How do I get to Bangor?
All flights there are domestic with the majority coming in from
New York’s La Guardia Airport. This makes it very easy for
UK travellers to access the city by taking a flight to La Guardia then making the onward connection. The airport is some three miles from the centre of Bangor and the buses and taxis will get you downtown in no time at all.
What is the Airport Like?
It’s a bit of a blocky building, not attractive in any sense of the word but at least it’s compact with many of the facilities you’d expect from a regional airport.
So What Will it be Like When I Land?
It’s an airport without air bridges so you’ll need to walk to the terminal building. Rather pretentiously it has a domestic and international terminal but as 99% of the flights are domestic, the international terminal is very, very quiet! Once inside the terminal building, you’ll be immediately at the baggage reclaim belts and should soon have your luggage. In the arrivals hall you’ll need to go up the escalator to the first floor for the airport information desk whilst on the ground floor you will have seen the car hire company desks immediately ahead of you. There are shops and cafes on the first floor should you be hungry after your flight and when you’re ready to set off, the local buses stop right outside the terminal.
What Can I Expect in the Way of Facilities When I Leave?
Shopping after dropping off your bags can be a lot of fun at Bangor Airport. The Grasshopper Shop has a mix of clothing, accessories, music and gifts of a more bohemian nature. These are complemented with typically Maine gifts found in the Bangor Gift Shop next door. Food there also offers a rich experience; from New England fine dining including lobster in the Red Baron Lounge, to café style snacks in the Coffee Shop. Sadly the service isn’t complemented with free Wi-Fi so you’ll have to wait before checking those emails but you’ll fly from Bangor, smiling at the whole airport experience.
Bangor Airport (airport code BGR) is an international airport which is jointly owned by the public and the military. It has one runway and offers flights with US Airways Express, Delta Airlines and Las Vegas based airline Allegiant Air. This is a very popular small airport for customers because there are connecting flights to New York LaGuardia from whence you can cross the Atlantic to Europe.
Renting a car at Bangor Airport allows easy access to the nearby city of Bangor and the surrounding Penobscot County. We also get high demand for vehicles during the Maine lobster festival. Bangor Airport has a charter flights which operate solely for the military. A number of US troops bound for Iraq and Afghanistan have passed through Bangor Airport on their journey.
