Pinetown Mini Guide
What can you Tell me About Pinetown?
It’s a very traditional small city that used to be a separate entity but which has now been swallowed up by the municipality of eThekwini. You can still determine Pinetown’s limits and can also identify the remains of the old town on the crossroads. In the Boer War, the British established a concentration camp for women and children there. Pinetown today has a great sporting heritage with a top cricket club resident there which has supplied players to the national squad.
How do I get to Pinetown?
The closest entry point to Pinetown by air is via Durban’s King Shaka (LaMercy) Airport. There are few international flights to the airport and most international travellers would be better off flying into Johannesburg’s OR Tambo Airport
before connecting on to Durban. An alternative is to make the connection from Europe in Dubai
. From the airport it’s possible to hire a car at Durban Airport
to get you the ten miles to the city or, if you prefer to get a hire car once you’re settled, a bus can take you to the centre of Pinetown.
What is There to do and see in Pinetown?
You can watch a cricket match played at the town’s cricket ground. You can wander around the ruins of the original town on the crossroads of Main Road and Stapleton. If you want to escape the small city feel and perhaps laze on a beach, Durban, twenty minutes away has fabulous beaches, protected by shark nets and also has a wider range of quality restaurants and nightlife.
