Shannon Airport Mini Guide
So Tell me About Shannon Airport
Arrive in Shannon Airport and you will dive straight into the heart of the Mid - (and wild) West of Ireland. The airport at Shannon is the most westerly located airport in the whole of Europe, last stop before America! Speaking of which, for those travelling to the United States, Shannon Airport offers a complete immigration pre-clearance service. It is the first non American airport in the world to do so, perfect for those on a tight schedule. Shannon Airport is a perfect starting point for exploring the beautiful island of Ireland.
How do I Get There?
When approaching Shannon Airport from Limerick City
you need to follow the N18 in a northerly direction. The same route applies (N18) if travelling from Galway but in a southerly direction.
Coming from Dublin simply take the N7 and head west and from Kerry
the N21 going north. The closest city to Shannon Airport is Limerick which is about a distance of 24 kilometres. Buses and taxis are available from all nearby towns.
What if I’m a Last Minute Shopper?
Don’t worry! Apart from the expected designer perfumes and world famous Irish Whiskies the exquisite handmade chocolates and designer goods, you will find a little gem for those last minute gifts in the form of the Glen Aran Irish Markets providing a traditional range of knits perfect for Grandma, rugs to cosy up your home and jewellery to satisfy the most demanding of fashonistas. Left your paperback on the nightstand? Don’t panic, there’s plenty of choice available at WHSmith where you’ll find everything from the latest Hello magazine to a hardback copy of the History of Ireland - they even provide confectionery in case you like a Kit Kat with your Vogue.
If you have any Irish friends where you live, earn endless brownie points by picking up a bag of ‘Tayto’ (Irish Potato Chips) at the Londis shop before you leave. Shannon Airport also offers a shop and collect service that allows you to purchase items on arrival and just pick them up at the airport on your departure, this service is available free of charge to all passengers travelling within the EU.
Will not be a problem at Shannon Airport nor will a seemingly unquenchable thirst. The usual mix of branded Italian coffees and gourmet sandwiches are available but as Shannon Airport is the actual birthplace of the traditional Irish coffee it would be a shame to leave without trying the original recipe at the Sheridan Food Pub. Joe Sheridan, a chef at Shannon Airport ,invented the Irish coffee as we know it today, at Shannon in 1943 and it is still made to his original recipe. They also serve a great selection of hot meals and tasty snacks to help you on your way.
Is the Airport Wheelchair Accessible?
Shannon Airport is easily wheelchair accessible and all amenities are friendly to persons with restricted mobility. It is advised that should you require any extra assistance or help that you inform your airline carrier in advance so that they can make provisions for you.
