Cherbourg Airport Mini Guide
Cherbourg Airport is located to the east of Cherbourg Octeville, 11kms away. It is situated in the middle of Maupertus sur Mer and Gonneville in the Manche Department. Originally built for NATO by the United States it was later abandoned when France decided to not participate in the central command structure of NATO.
Having one long runway, 2440 metres long and 45 metres wide, it can handle medium haul aeroplanes due to its OTAN provision. Maximum loading capacity is 25t per single wheel, 31t per twin wheels and 56t per boogie. Adjacent to the runway are six bays holding aircraft. They are numbered from N1 to N6.
The airport can cater for numerous flights although the only scheduled flight to Jersey
(via Cherbourg) has been cancelled. Nowadays charter flights and private jets use the airport with around 3000 flights throughout 2007.
There are ample parking spaces nearby, so you can park your hire car in either short or long stay car parks and payment is made either in the terminal building or the parking meters.
Although only being a fairly small terminal it is full of facilities. There is Le Coucou de Fourchette restaurant. Open all of the week apart from Sundays it offers a variety of four course menus. Serving passengers and staff for 12 hours of the day, from 8am to 8pm, it also provides snacks and other refreshments. Monsieur Luc DuFour, the proprietor, also sells books, maps, and an array of superb French wines.
