Aalborg Mini Guide
Aalborg is a fun loving city in Jutland, Denmark, which holds the largest carnival in Northern Europe. Aalborg carnival has much of the heavy drinking which is associated with life in Northern Europe where the summers are short and the winters are long. However, despite the weather there is plenty to do in Aalborg such as swimming in the summer and ice skating in the winter.

To get into Aalborg you will fly into Aalborg Airport which is located only a few miles from the city itself on the route 180 once you have crossed the Limfjord Bridge. Airlines which use it include British Airways and Cimber Stirling as well as the local carriers Norwegian Air Shuttle and Air Norway. In terms of domestic flights there are routes with Scandinavian Airlines System and Atlantic Airways as well as Cimber Stirling and Norwegian Air Shuttle. You can get to the airport from other cities in Norway
such as Norresundby and Frederikshavn on route 55. By road the E45 highway goes from Finland through Aalborg before reaching Italy
This harbour town has been around since 700 AD and is situated on the Limfjord, a location which helped it grow industrially. Aalborg thrived during the Middle Ages not least because fishing for herring was very successful there. Today herring is still among the local delicacies you should try when eating in this part of the world. Danish snaps is also produced there if you want a local drink to wash the herring down with.
Denmark’s air force is based in Aalborg but during the war their aerodrome was one of the first to be captured by the Germans in 1940. The Germans then used it as a base from which to attack Denmark. Despite only having 120,000 inhabitants Aalborg is the fourth largest city in the country. It is also a university city, though the University of Aalborg has only been around for 35 years.
The town centre has some interesting castles, churches and buildings to see. One of the remnants of Aalborg’s ancient history is an old Viking Graveyard which is worth seeing if you are passing through the city. Also of interest is the National Museum which has a particularly fine Jacobean panelled room. There is an art museum in Aalborg too. For particularly good views out of the city head to the Aalborgtranet which has a panorama of Aalborg and the surrounding fjords.
