This harbour town has been around since 700 AD and is situated on the Limfjord, a location which helped it grow industrially. Aalborg thrived during the Middle Ages not least because fishing for herring was very successful there. Today herring is still among the local delicacies you should try when eating in this part of the world. Danish snaps is also produced there if you want a local drink to wash the herring down with.

Aalborg Harbour

Denmark’s air force is based in Aalborg but during the war their aerodrome was one of the first to be captured by Germany in 1940. The Germans then used it as a base from which to attack Denmark. Despite only having 120,000 inhabitants Aalborg is the fourth largest city in the country. It is also a university city, though the University of Aalborg has only been around for 35 years.

The town centre has some interesting castles, churches and buildings to see. One of the remnants of Aalborg’s ancient history is an old Viking Graveyard which is worth seeing if you are passing through the city. Also of interest is the National Museum which has a particularly fine Jacobean panelled room. There is an art museum in Aalborg too. For particularly good views out of the city head to the Aalborgtranet which has a panorama of Aalborg and the surrounding fjords.
