Tell me About Aarhus
The city is the second largest in Denmark after the capital and is the country’s largest port. First recorded in the 11th century, the city is likely to be far older with glass beads discovered in the area known as Arus and thought to be of Viking origin. Today, the city prides itself on its welcoming personality with it declaring itself as ‘The City of Smiles’ and in calling itself ‘The Little Big City’ it demonstrates that there’s a lot of culture and activities in the small area covered by the city.

How do I get to Aarhus?
The easiest way is by flying into Aarhus Airport found 22 miles away from Aarhus outside the town of Tirstrup. Several airlines fly there including Scandinavian Air and Ryanair who have a route to Aarhus from Stansted. Taxis and buses operate at the airport taking passengers directly to Aarhus or to the local railway station for journeys into Aarhus.

What is There to see and do in Aarhus?
A favourite destination within the city is to visit Den Gamle By, an open air museum where Danish houses and other buildings dating from over four hundred years ago have been moved to give an idea of life in the country over the centuries. Next on your list should be Aarhus Domkirke, the tallest and longest cathedral in Denmark. The building is 800 years old and is considered to be an architectural masterpiece. The city’s museum, Bymuseet is also worth some of your time as it explains the history of the city through illustrated displays and multimedia. Reference is made to many of the sights you may already have seen in the city. Finally, visit Aarhus Art Museum called ARoS which has several thought provoking displays in the largest museum and gallery in Denmark.

What Should I buy When I’m in Aarhus?
Bazar Vest is a great little shopping area where many of the city’s ethnic communities have set up shops selling curios and crafts from all over the world. The items there may not be typically Danish but at least you are guaranteed to walk away with something unusual and possibly unique from your visit.

And What Should I eat in Aarhus?
There’s nothing that you can eat there that is typical of the region and in fact the wealth of cultures there means that the choice of international cuisine is probably the best in the country. The best, but most expensive, places to eat are along the river walk called the Aen. There, row upon row of different restaurants vie for your custom but wherever you eat the food is delicious.

And for a Night out?
The high number of students in the city means that there are lots of places to hang out at night. The city also welcomes the gay community and there are lots of gay bars, clubs and other entertainment specifically for that community. With caution, almost all areas of the city are safe at night and you’ll have a good time.

Latest Update from Aarhus:

20/05/12 - The ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum is Denmark's finest modern art gallery and this summer plays host to the video artist Tony Oursler who will be on hand to talk about 35 of his video sculptures. The exhibition runs until the 29th July.
