Copenhagen Mini Guide

Situated on the islands of Zealand and Amager, Denmark’s capital Copenhagen is also the largest city in the country. It is separated from Sweden by a strait of water known as the Oresund. Copenhagen started as a small fishing village during Viking times but gradually grew into being the capital of the Danish empire, aided by its harbour becoming a centre for commerce.

Copenhagen Harbour view

Today Copenhagen is known as the city of spires due to the prevalence of churches and palaces throughout the cityscape. The city has also won many awards for the quality of its architecture and has many famous local architects as well as buildings built by international stars like Norman Foster.

Copenhagen Palace

This city of nearly four million people has been recognised as one of the most forward thinking in the world and is a centre for business, science and culture. Visitors will find everything in Copenhagen from great restaurants and bars, to music festivals and all manner of museums. Copenhagen is considered to have a very high quality of life where most people can cycle to work with ease and a clean environment that allows them to swim in the city harbour.

It is a city of fresh air and simple architecture which has cold winters and hot summers, though not excessively so unless there are heat waves. Luckily it is very easy to get to beaches in Copenhagen which are only a short drive away from the city centre. Another way to cool down is to try the local brew - until recently Carlsberg beer was produced in Copenhagen and the brewery has moved to nearby Jutland. Outdoor life is paramount there and there is a huge amount of parks and green spaces to enjoy. Cemeteries are treated as parks too but they must be used respectfully for quiet activities. There are just over 20 boroughs in Copenhagen while there is also the area of Greater Copenhagen which encompasses municipalities such as Frederiksberg which is full of beautiful 18th century mansions.

Copenhagen Frederiksberg

Copenhagen has its own airport which is the busiest around and deals with just under 22 million passengers every year. Copenhagen Airport (previously known as Kastrup Airport) is located about eight kilometres away from the city itself and serves the other cities in the region with Scandinavian Airlines System and Sterling Airlines being two of the main carriers to use it.

Latest Update from Copenhagen:

20/05/12 - From the 27th May, many of the world's top sand artists will be demonstrating their skills on the seashore at Ofelia Beach. The Sand Sculpture Festival 2012 runs until the 5th of August and you'll be treated to some amazing pieces of, sadly, temporary art.

Copenhagen is the largest city in Denmark and it occupies an amazing spot across two islands. Indeed Copenhagen is gradually combining with the Swedish city of Malmo across the water to create a large metropolitan area. With car hire Copenhagen anywhere in Scandinavia is accessible and we offer cars as an alternative to the bicycles which are so popular there.

The free-spirited locals also love to swim in the inner harbour when the weather is good. But Copenhagen is not all about the laid-back lifestyle and you can also enjoy business opportunities in the shipping and IT spheres.
