Donetsk Mini Guide
What can you Tell me About Donetsk?
The city is an important industrial centre in Ukraine and home to the country’s steel and coal concerns. It was founded by an enterprising Welshman, John Hughes, in the middle of the 19th century and was initially named after him. Several changes of name after, the city became known as Donetsk and was one of the proud host cities for the 2012 Euro football championships. Whilst mainly industrialised, the city brushed off its historic attractions, ready to entice the tourist and football fan between matches in 2012. The hidden beauty of the city was revealed and much needed tourist cash to the city.
What’s the Easiest way to get to Donetsk?
Currently it’s not that easy to get from the UK
to Donetsk as there are no direct flights to Donetsk airport. Euro 2012 fans were in luck though as many tour companies laid on charter flights from UK airports for the duration of the tournament but these did cease shortly afterwards. For now travellers wanting to access the city need to fly into Boryspil airport in Kiev
and catch a connecting AeroSvit or Ukraine International Airlines flight into the airport. The alternative is to fly into Kiev, hire a car at Zhuliany or Boryspil airports and drive the several hours to Donetsk from there.
What Should I do When I’m in Donetsk?
There are a number of important buildings dotted around the older part of the city as well as the strangely named Forged Figures Park where each year metal workers congregate to make metal statues and other works of art which add to the park’s collection. There’s also the statue to the city’s founder, John Hughes and that of Artem, a famed Russian politician, the adopted son of Stalin.
