Buffalo Airport Mini Guide

Buffalo Airport is known in full as Buffalo Niagra International Airport and is in Erie County of New York. The airport is the third busiest in the New York State area and handles passenger numbers around 5.5 million every year. The airport opened in 1939 and was subject to several renovations and expansions over the year to cater for the larger planes that were flying into the area.

The airport had, in previous decades, been considered one of the most expensive airports to fly from. However, the potential of the low cost flight business was quickly realised as a demand grew. Buffalo Airport became a provider for JetBlue Airways low cost flights and later other airlines. The increase in numbers were quite staggering as previous estimates placed passenger numbers as going to be 3.8 million. Currently there are 110 flights every day from the airport. There is both an east and west terminal that in total have 22 gates in the airport.

Buffalo Airport

The airport is in very close proximity to the Canadian border and so is a convenient arrival and departure point for Canadian citizens. Current statistics estimate the 33% of the passengers using the airport to be from Canada. To cater for demand there are bus services that now pick up passengers from the airport and take them across the border.

The airport can be reached by car through Route 33 exit Kensington Expressway and Interstate 90. Due to the large numbers there is high demand for parking at the airport and it does have facilities for both long and short term. In total there are 6,850 parking spaces.
