The airport passenger traffic reached almost 8 million in 2008, prior to the hurricane arrival of Hurricane Katrina the airport was managing almost 10 million a year.

The airport is ranked very highly for its on time departures and flight loads, appearing fourth out of the top 47 busiest airports in the USA. It also has one of the most impeccable safety records for the USA. The airport area covers 1,500 acres and has three runways which handle around 350 flight operations every day. The airports flight schedule includes domestic and international arrivals and departures. To cater to the international arrivals the airport has a enclosed customs and immigration area, international flights currently operate to and from Mexico and Honduras.

New Orleans Airport has two terminals known as the East and West which are linked by a central ticket area. There are four concourses. Concourse A caters for US Airways and has six gates. Concourse B handles Southwest Airlines flights and has 13 gates. Concourse C has 15 gates and manages the International flights. Finally there is concourse D which is the newest of the four which has 7 gates. There is currently a campaign by the airport to improve facilities such as lighting and seating which is ongoing.
