Fujairah Mini Guide

Tell me About Fujairah
Fujairah is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates and the only one that is on the Gulf of Oman. It is also unusual that it is mountainous, the others all being desert.

How can I get There?
Fujairah does have its own airport but at present only flights to India and the Philippines are operational. So the best option is to fly into Dubai or Muscat and hire a car. The drive from Dubai to Fujairah takes 90 minutes.

Is it Easy to get Around?
There is no public transport in Fujairah as such. There are taxis available to get you around the city, but hiring a car is better as you can really explore this emirate – there is not much to see or do in the city so it is best used as a base.

What can I see in Fujairah?
The city is home to the oldest mosque in the UAE, Al Bidyah Mosque. It is a mud and brick structure built in 1446 and unusually has 4 domes and no minaret.

Anything to see Outside the City?
A drive through the Hajar Mountains is recommended; also look out for the Wadi al Wurayah Waterfalls.  For a day out at the beach, the best places to go are Dibba and Khor Fakkan where you can relax in the sun or try out the local water sports.

Where can I eat?
Try Persian cuisine at the popular Sadaf Restaurant, a typical dish would be rice and kebabs made from chicken or lamb. Al Meshwar is known for its schawarma and falafel. You can also try smoking a shisha there!

What Hotels are Close by?
The Hilton Fujairah Resort is a popular choice for tourists to the area. It is a five star hotel with 103 rooms and has its own beach and pool area. There is a fitness centre onsite and you can enjoy water sports or cycle around the grounds. You can have a seafood platter at Sailors Restaurant or go to Neptunia for a themed buffet.

Latest Update from Fujairah:

14/06/12 - Fujairah is less westernised than other parts of the UAE and it's a great place to celebrate the end of Ramadan. The Eid festival begins on the 19th August and continues until the 22nd. Be prepared to be given small gifts and don't be afraid to offer gifts in return, especially to children.

The government are trying to preserve much of the old gypsum and coral houses in Fujairah and whilst the project is not completed yet, watching the works progress is fascinating.
