Umhlanga Ridge Mini Guide

What is Umhlanga Ridge?
Work on Umhlanga Ridge was begun over a decade ago to provide a completely new and planned area for housing, white collar work and retail opportunities above the historic town of Umhlanga. Construction is continuing today but already Umhlanga Ridge offers great shopping and exciting jobs in companies that have decided to relocate to Umhlanga Ridge. The town has a pleasant, if sanitised, feel to it but combined with a stay in the coastal hotels along Umhlanga Rocks, it is worth the trip to visit it.

How do I get to Umhlanga Ridge?
If you are travelling to Umhlanga Ridge you’ll be pleased to hear that Durban’s International Airport relocated there a few years back, reopening as King Shaka International Airport, otherwise known as La Mercy Airport. Sadly, the airport isn’t fully up to speed with international flights and the only long haul flights available are to Dubai. Travellers from Europe should consider flying into Johannesburg and taking a connecting flight. Once at the airport, travel into Umhlanga Ridge isn’t straightforward with no trains making connections although a bus service does operate locally. Most people choose to rent a car at the airport and you should check car hire South Africa for further details.
What is There to See and Do in Umhlanga Ridge?
Apart from the shopping, most of the activities are centred on Umhlanga Rocks and the large resort hotels there. The beach is good for swimming although there is a risk of shark attack. There’s a lot of history surrounding the sugar cane cultivation in past times, several mills have been converted into museums whilst tours of the plantations and the mills are popular.
