Sandton Gauteng Mini Guie
What can you Tell me About Sandton?
Sandton is a very exclusive part of Johannesburg and after the so called ‘white flight’ from other parts of the city, it became a popular and increasingly wealthy part of the country as wealth concentrated there. There’s not much for tourists to do but it’s a nice and safe place to be based if you want to explore the city a little more.
How Easy is it to get Into Sandton?
It’s very easy with the huge, OR Tambo International Airport nearby. Flights arrive at the airport daily from many European cities including BA, South African Airways and Virgin flights from London Heathrow
. There are even flights from the US
. You can hire a car at OR Tambo
or take the quick, easy and cheap Gautrain from the airport direct to Sandton Gautrain station where you can collect your hire car.
What is There to see and do in Sandton?
The prime attraction for tourists is the huge mall called Sandton City. With over a hundred retail outlets and thirty or more places to eat plus an entertainment complex you can easily spend a day or more there. Many top end retailers are represented, aiming to part the wealthy Sandtonians from their money.
Elsewhere there is a much photographed statue of Nelson Mandela in Nelson Mandela Square where you’ll also find the wonderful Gallery on the Square and the Theatre on the Square for some non-retail entertainment.
Arriving or departing from the Gautrain, you’ll find plenty of facilities at the station. There’s a selection of high street shops, a café, take away outlets and an ATM should you need cash.
