Lodz Mini Guide

What can you Tell me About Lodz?
Lodz is the third biggest city in Poland and is a major industrial city. The name means ‘boat’ and the citizens refer to themselves as the ‘boat people’. The city was founded in the 14th century but remained a small agricultural village with barely a few thousand people living there until the middle of the 19th century. With the advent of the industrial revolution in Poland, the city grew meteorically as a textile centre and within decades had increased its population more than a hundredfold, eventually becoming known as the ‘Manchester of Poland’. The wealth created led to the construction of grand buildings which now help to fuel the tourist industry with their beauty.

What’s the Easiest way to get Into Lodz?
The vast majority of flights into Lodz Airport come from the UK with Ryanair operating routes from five UK airports whilst Wizzair operate a single route from Luton Airport. The airport is only around three miles from the city centre and regularly serviced by the local bus network as well as taxis. There is so much to see in and around Lodz that many travellers now choose to rent a car at Lodz Airport to use during their break. Check out our unbeatable prices on the link from this page where you can pre-book your Lodz car hire.

What Should I Make Sure I see During my Stay?
If you’re feeling fit then walk the length of Piotrkowska Street, the longest commercial street in Europe, and lined by many of the wonderful buildings that the wealth of the industrial revolution helped to build. For an idea of the effect the Nazis had on the city you can visit the Jewish cemetery which is the largest in Europe and see the tombs of many who died during the occupation of the city. Lodz’s Jewish ghetto, also called the Litzmannstadt Ghetto remains today as a stark reminder of the treatment of the Jews in Poland. It was the last of the Jewish ghettoes to be emptied because the inhabitants worked so hard for the Nazis.

What Can I do in the Evenings in Lodz?
Lodz has a fabulous philharmonic orchestra which plays regular concerts in the city and there are also a number of festivals held in the city throughout the year and the likelihood is that one will be on whilst you’re there. The festivals include sports, film, cultural, food and music so there’s something for everyone.

Lodz is located in the centre of Poland and so makes a great base for tourists who want to visit this large European country. Nearly three quarters of a million people live in Lodz and although it is a large city having a hire car in Lodz is still the preferred method of travel.

With car hire in Lodz you can drive to the Polish capital Warsaw which is some 130 kilometres to the north east. But there is much to see in Lodz itself with some beautiful traditional Polish architecture. A good example of this is at the Alexander Nevsky orthodox church.
