Just got back f

Just got back from holiday in Casablanca, had a really good time. Our rental car was invaluable as I think without it we would have been stuck in the hotel. There are loads of taxis around, but they have these ones called 'grand taxis' I think, where you have to share the journey with strangers. Bit weird!....and I don't think we would have felt comfortable doing that.

Agadir is actua

Agadir is actually quite a nice holiday resort, the weather was excellent and the beaches were good. The locals can be a bit annoying though and be prepared to haggle/barter for most things.

Morocco Mini Guide

With a coastline that meets both the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, Morocco is in North Africa. Morocco has borders with Melilla and Ceuta in the north, Algeria in the east and Mauritania in the south. Morocco also faces the Spanish mainland across the Strait of Gibraltar. Although Morocco forms part of North Africa, the population is predominantly Muslim in belief. Morocco is divided into seven separate regions;

  • Mediterranean Morocco is home to a variety of Spanish influenced towns and Spanish is spoken fairly widely.
  • The North Atlantic Coast covers half of the northern coastline of Morocco, and it is in this region that the nation’s most famous city, Casablanca can be found.
  • The South Atlantic Coast is far more relaxed than the northern coast, with many excellent beaches.
  • High Atlas covers the area dominated by the High Atlas Mountains and includes the city of Marrakech.
  • Middle Atlas covers the area containing the Middle Atlas Mountains, including Meknes. Saharan Morocco is the vast region of desert wilderness which buts up against the Algerian border.
  • Anti Atlis is the entire southern region which covers Tarouddant and all of Western Sahara.
Major cities in Morocco include Rabat, the capital city, a very laid back and relaxed place, featuring 12th century minarets. Casablanca, now a modern city, citing on the shores of the sea. Many tourists choose Casablanca as their starting destination in Morocco. Fez, the former capital, which is notable as being one of the largest and oldest medieval cities to be found anywhere around the globe. Marrakech is a fusion of old and new, a fascinating place to explore and famed for the Great Plaza of Djemaa El Fna.

The most popular beach holiday resort in Morocco is Agadir, the town is thoroughly modern, with history and culture taking something of a back seat. It is possible to take excursions to the surrounding villages using nothing more than the local bus service.

By renting a hire vehicle the visitor to Morocco will be able to explore at their own leisure. The main road system is well maintained although most roads are fairly narrow, usually a single lane. Most main cities are connected by expressways, making fast travel between the major centers quite quick. Road signs could pose a problem as they are only written in French and Arabic. Finding fuel in the rural areas can also be quite challenging.
