Who Travels to Tuxtla Gutierrez?
A lot of the travellers to this part of Mexico come for the archaeology and the topography of the famous region known as the Chiapas. It’s a fabulous place for Mayan ruins with Palenque, Bonampak and Chinkultic amongst many others. There are few worthwhile beaches in the area and tourism is relatively undeveloped. You’re more likely to be staying in a backpacker’s hostel than a five star hotel!



How Easy is it to get to Tuxtla Gutierrez Airport?
It’s not that easy unless you’re travelling within Mexico. There’s only a single international flight and that’s from Houston with ExpressJet Airlines. Travellers from elsewhere will need to make a connection at Houston, Mexico City or Cancun. From the airport to the city is a journey of around 22 miles, long and uncomfortable on public transport but much less stressful if you’ve pre-booked a rental car at Tuxtla Gutierrez Airport.



What is the Airport Like?
The airport is considered to be state-of-the-art, having only recently been completed. It’s very modern and has a host of facilities. There’s a food court with a small range of eating establishments depending on your appetite and timescale. The airport’s shops are great with a wide range of fashion stores, jewellery, books and magazines, confectionery and more. You can pick up souvenirs and gifts at the airport with traditional blankets and embroidery sold there as well as pottery and carved wooden items. If you need cash to pay for any of these items, the ATM at the airport is easy to locate and there’s a small office of the local bank for any other transactions.
