Cavan Mini Guide

Cavan is the seat of County Cavan in the north east of Ireland. The word Cavan means 'The Hollow' in Irish.
Ireland has some incredible scenery so why miss a moment of it? Some choice landmarks in Cavan include the Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Felim and the Cavan courthouse.

Cavan has a fascinating history with many old castles and monasteries established there by the ruling families of the time. The O'Reilly family was one of the most influential and powerful of the families. By 1610 King James I of England had granted a town charter to Cavan. This meant it became busier as a thriving market centre.

The town really began to take off at the end of the 19th century when a rail road was built there making it an important hub on the transportation route.

These days it relies heavily on its natural attractions, and one of the most unusual, linked to that is the Open Watercolour Competition called the 'Plein Air Art Cometition, open to all. Just turn up on the day in June and start painting.

Sadly the rail system is much more expensive today than it used to be which makes having a hire car an even more attractive option which gives you the freedom to go where you want to go.

You will find Cavan to be very well located and accessible as the main N3 road links it to Dublin and towns in the south of Ireland.

About 30,000 people live in the area surrounding Cavan so you will not find it to be overly crowded and congested.

Latest Update from Cavan:

30/04/12 - Cavan is so proud of its natural attractions that it has begun organising weekends, a couple of times a year, when trained local guides give up their time free of charge to lead interested tourists around the surrounding countryside. Anyone is welcome to join the walks which leave at regular intervals each day.

Cavan is part of the Republic of Ireland but it is also close to the border with Northern Ireland. Therefore those who want to explore all that this island has to offer should choose car hire Cavan, especially as this county town is conveniently located on the N3 road that heads to a number of other Irish conurbations including the capital Dublin.

The new M3 motorway has also recently been completed making other locations even more accessible from Cavan.  Should you choose to stay in Cavan itself one of the most impressive sights for tourists is the cathedral of St Patrick and St Felim.
