Flying to Debrecen takes you away from the more commercial tourism of
Budapest and into the wilder parts of Hungary. Few travellers from outside Eastern Europe venture this far and you’ll be treated to old-fashioned hospitality and villages which have remained untouched for centuries. The region is also known for its mineral baths, most notably around the salt lake called Sosto. This year for the first time, travellers from Britain can fly direct to Hungary without being limited to Budapest. Wizzair are beginning a daily flight from
Luton commencing on the 18th June.
What is the Airport Like?
There have been extensive and on-going works in progress at Debrecen Airport for the majority of the last decade. This has included an upgrade to the terminals which were originally converted from a military facility and developments to isolate domestic travel from international travel. The future of the airport looks bright with Ryanair already training pilots at the airport and the introduction of facilities to make traveller’s stays in the airport more comfortable. Sustainability has been a key element of the airport’s development and has earned it an international award for the use of clean energy.

So What Facilities Does it Have?
It currently has very few, although that is due to change shortly. Tenders are out for the contract to operate a buffet style restaurant at the airport. Until then, food options are limited to what you bring yourself. There are also no shops at present at the airport although a duty free shop, also selling gifts and local food products is due to come on line very soon. Car hire is available at the airport, very useful given the dearth of public transport. The desks are easy to find in the nearly deserted arrivals hall.
