Hong Kong Mini Guide

Hong Kong displays multiple faces to the visitor. With firm Cantonese influences, yet moulded by a long period as a British colony, Hong Kong is a true example of east meets west in every sense. Hong Kong is the major tourist destination in China and a major hub within the nation itself. A mixture of modern technology and Chinese tradition, with a surprise on every street. A cosmopolitan city with much to offer the visitor.

Hong Kong is a harbour city, and one which provides every possible facility for its inhabitants. For those who tire of the cityscape, the rural landscape around the city, and the cloud topped mountains provide a tranquil counterpoint. Hong Kong can be split into four separate districts. Hong Kong Island was originally the site of British occupation.

This is the Hong Kong that we see most often on TV, tall skyscrapers alongside neon lit storefronts. Kowloon is the name of the peninsula that connects Hong Kong Island to the mainland proper. Kowloon is one of the most densely populated places on the globe. The New Territories encompass a combination of farms, old abandoned villages, country parks and industrial zones. The Outlying Islands are comprised of almost 250 smaller islands, ranging from tiny rocks to the major island of Lantau which is itself twice the size of Hong Kong Island.

The best time to visit Hong Kong for people who enjoy warmer weather is between October and December. For people who enjoy a less humid climate, then January to March are the best months. Chinese New Year is arguably the most fascinating time to visit Hong Kong, as it is the location of the largest firework show in China on this night.

Travel around Hong Kong is made extremely easy by the Mass Transit Railway (MTR). A combination of over ground and underground rail lines speed passengers to locations all over the Hong Kong District. Hong Kong is also one of the only cities in the world with an extensive and well maintained tram network. This inexpensive form of transport is often the only way for people to make short journeys within Hong Kong due to the increasing traffic congestion problems in the city. There are also two types of buses operating within Hong Kong. Firstly the standard double-decker style, and secondly the public light buses, which are similar to minibuses and follow a prescribed route.
