A Mini Guide to Patra and Araxos Patras Airport

Who Travels to Patra?
Patras is a busy commercial region but its current strength is in no small part due to its historical status. Many go there to experience the history that includes Roman remains and that of Ancient Greece. If you want to get a good view of the city, head for the Kastro, or castle and afterwards find out more about what you’re looking at by visiting the recently opened Archaeological Museum. The city doesn’t have any beaches of note and you’ll need your hire car from Araxos Airport to get along the coast to find sandy shores. Patras has countless festivals and at almost any time of year you can get involved in one that attracts thousands of visitors from across Greece.

How do I get to Araxos Patras Airport?
Flights go to Araxos from all over Europe including a Ryanair flight from Stansted. All flights are seasonal so at certain times of the year, notably January and February, Araxos is a no fly zone! The airport is around twelve miles from Patras itself and is served by buses and taxis although it’s a far more pleasant journey in your own hire car.

What is the Airport Like?
The airport is mainly a military airport with commercial passenger services coming a distant second in importance. The terminal building isn’t very inspiring being simply a white concrete box by the side of the airport access road. Things do improve inside though for unlike many other Greek secondary airports, there are facilities for the traveller. You’ll find two basic snack bars either side of check in with standard café fare, generally tasteless, and served up with a beer, glass of water or soft drinks and coffee. There are no shops apart from a reasonably well stocked duty free store and no banking or ATM facilities but there is a post box for those last minute cards written whilst staving off boredom at the airport.
