  • Patmos was where St John the Divine lived and received the Revelation, documenting the end of the world

What can you Tell me About Patmos?
If it weren’t for the link with St John the Apostle, Patmos may well have remained an obscure island in the Dodecanese but it was in a cave on the island that he was visited by Jesus and told the story of the end of the world which he wrote down as the Book of Revelations. Since its inclusion in the Bible, the island has become a place of pilgrimage for Christians.

How do I get to Patmos?
There’s no airport on Patmos and travellers to the island must first fly to airports on Leros, Kos or Rhodes before taking a ferry or hydrofoil to its port, Skala. Upon arrival at Skala you’ll find dozens of taxis, buses and car hire companies eager to get you to your accommodation. Flights to Rhodes and Kos are the cheapest, mainly because they are so frequent, but also because many of the budget carriers have them included in their routes.

What Should I do on Patmos?
Patmos has many small but attractive shingle or stony beaches for those who come for relaxation whilst those who want to explore can walk the ancient streets of Chora or visit the sites associated with the Revelation of St John; the Monastery of St John the Theologian, or the Cave of the Apocalypse. Be warned that both of these are major sites of pilgrimage and can be very busy, especially during Christian festivals.

Latest Update from Patmos:

11/05/12 -  Patmos has seen a surge in bookings this year as the supposed end of the world in 2012 approaches. Many have come to gain a better understanding of the Book of Revelations and in response, there are several talks being given to explain the context of St John the Theologian's work. Ask in your hotel for details when you arrive.
